This course will offer an abbreviated survey of the Religion Clauses of the First Amendment. The course will address (1) the definition of “religion” and the foundation of religious liberty, (2) the two Religion Clauses of the First Amendment (Establishment & Free Exercise), and (3) controversies concerning religion in conflict with claims to competing rights. Class discussion will aim to highlight some of the tensions that arise in interpreting and applying the Religion Clauses.
